Woman getting a cupping procedure

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine, which aids in pain management, inflammation, blood flow, overall well-being and relaxation. This treatment is performed by a massage therapist and consists of putting special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. These cups can be made of glass, bamboo, earthenware and silicone.

A combustible substance such as rubbing alcohol is placed inside the cup to initiate a flame. As the fire dies down the cup is place upside down on your skin. The cool air inside the cup creates a vacuum that causes your skin to rise into the cup. This reddens and expands your blood vessels. The cups remain on your skin for approximately three minutes.
